Esquisse pour l'escalier des Fêtes de l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris : La Musique
Luc-Olivier Merson·1888
Historical Context
Luc-Olivier Merson's esquisse for the Hôtel de Ville staircase depicting 'La Musique' (Music, 1888) is the companion panel to 'Le Chant,' completing a pair of performing-arts allegories within the Fête staircase program. Music as allegory — personified as a figure with instruments, in the act of playing — was among the most classical of allegorical subjects, with precedents reaching from Raphael through the great decorative programs of Versailles. Merson's interpretation brings his individual touch to this tradition, combining classical authority with the warmth and refinement that distinguished his decorative work from that of more academic practitioners. The work is in the Petit Palais.
Technical Analysis
The allegorical figure of Music is presented with instruments and the characteristic attributes of the art. Merson renders the figure with elegant drawing and a light, warm palette that conveys the festive character of the Hôtel de Ville's ceremonial spaces. The composition flows with decorative grace suited to the staircase setting.
