Vue de l'amphithéâtre de l'ancienne faculté de Médecine, à l'angle de la rue de la Bûcherie et de la rue de l'Hôtel Colbert
Emmanuel Lansyer·1886
Historical Context
Emmanuel Lansyer's 1886 view of the amphitheater of the old Faculty of Medicine in Paris documents a significant academic institution at the corner of the Rue de la Bûcherie and Rue de l'Hôtel Colbert on the Left Bank. The old Faculty of Medicine buildings were among the oldest academic medical sites in Europe, associated with centuries of Parisian medical teaching before the faculty's move to the Boulevard Saint-Germain. Lansyer, who devoted considerable effort to documenting disappearing or altered Parisian architectural interiors, preserved the appearance of this historic lecture hall before subsequent transformations. The work is in the Musée Carnavalet.
Technical Analysis
The tiered amphitheater space — with its banked seating surrounding the central demonstration area — creates a distinctive circular spatial composition. Lansyer records the architectural character with accuracy, handling the perspective and the light from windows or skylights above. The palette conveys worn wood and stone with warm tonal neutrality.
