Trinitas terrestris con santi e l'Eterno Padre
Jusepe de Ribera·1630
Historical Context
Ribera painted this Holy Family with Saints around 1630, combining the intimate domestic subject of the Holy Family with the devotional presence of additional saints. The painting reflects the Counter-Reformation emphasis on the Holy Family as a model for Christian domestic life. Working in Naples under Spanish viceregal patronage, Ribera was able to combine his Caravaggesque naturalism with the grand manner expected for major religious commissions.
Technical Analysis
The composition groups the sacred figures in a warm, intimate arrangement with Ribera's characteristic strong chiaroscuro. The contrast between the tenderly painted flesh of the Christ Child and the darker surrounding figures creates a devotional focal point.
