Historical Context

The forge of Vulcan — god of fire and metalworking — was a popular subject in Baroque painting because it combined mythological spectacle, nude figures in vigorous action, and the dramatic interplay of forge-light with shadow. Jean Jouvenet's treatment, dated around 1700 and now in Warsaw, shows Venus visiting Vulcan to commission armour for her son Aeneas — an episode from the Aeneid. The subject had been painted by Velázquez and other masters, and Jouvenet's version would have been understood in the context of that tradition. Venus in the forge creates an interesting visual contrast — the goddess of beauty and love in the masculine, industrial world of smithing — which Baroque painters exploited for compositional and erotic charge. Jouvenet typically worked in religious subjects, and this mythological canvas demonstrates the full range demanded of a premier academic painter.
