Gian Fritello by Andien de Clermont

Gian Fritello

Andien de Clermont·1742

Historical Context

Gian Fritello, a comic servant character, was part of De Clermont's extensive commedia dell'arte series for Lansdowne House in 1742. The name 'Fritello' (fritter or pancake) belongs to the tradition of food-named comic servants in the Italian theatrical tradition, where Zanni characters from the Bergamask tradition were consistently associated with appetite, cooking, and the material concerns of the lower orders. De Clermont documented this minor character type with the same care he brought to the more famous figures of the series, producing a comprehensive visual record of the commedia's full cast. The 1742 Lansdowne House panels are among the most complete documentary records of commedia character types in British decorative art.

Technical Analysis

De Clermont renders the servant character with the clear, flat decorative style consistent throughout the series. The costume details are precisely depicted to identify the character type, while the balanced composition and ornamental treatment serve the panel's function as wall decoration.
