William and Mary Presenting the Cap of Liberty to Europe (sketch for the painted ceiling of the Great Hall, Greenwich Hospital)
James Thornhill·ca. 1710
Historical Context
James Thornhill's sketch for the ceiling of the Great Hall at Greenwich Hospital depicts William and Mary presenting the Cap of Liberty to Europe, celebrating the Glorious Revolution's defense of Protestant liberty. Thornhill was the only native-born English painter to receive major decorative commissions in the Baroque manner, competing against Italian and French rivals. The Greenwich Hospital ceiling, completed in 1726, remains his masterpiece.
Technical Analysis
The oil-on-canvas sketch demonstrates Thornhill's compositional planning for the complex ceiling program, with dynamic figural arrangements suited to viewing from below. The fluid brushwork and warm palette capture the essential elements of the Baroque decorative scheme.
