Jack in His Glory: A Hackney Coach Driven by Drunken Sailors by Julius Caesar Ibbetson

Jack in His Glory: A Hackney Coach Driven by Drunken Sailors

Julius Caesar Ibbetson·1795

Historical Context

Julius Caesar Ibbetson was an English painter known for his lively genre scenes, landscapes, and depictions of rural and maritime life. This 1795 painting shows drunken sailors commandeering a hackney coach in a scene of comic urban disorder typical of Georgian London. Ibbetson, sometimes called "the Berchem of England" for his pastoral subjects, also excelled at capturing the raucous street life of late 18th-century London.

Technical Analysis

Ibbetson's technique combines Dutch-influenced genre painting with English caricature traditions, using warm lamplight effects and animated figure groupings to create a vivid narrative of urban revelry.
