The Little Roamer by Richard Rothwell

The Little Roamer

Richard Rothwell·ca. 1843

Historical Context

Richard Rothwell's The Little Roamer from around 1843 depicts a wandering child in the picturesque manner that characterized Victorian genre painting. Rothwell, an Irish painter who studied under Thomas Lawrence, combined his master's warm palette and fluent technique with the Romantic interest in childhood innocence and vulnerability. Such sentimental subjects of children in nature were enormously popular with Victorian audiences.

Technical Analysis

Rothwell's oil-on-canvas technique demonstrates the influence of Lawrence in the warm flesh tones and confident brushwork. The atmospheric landscape setting and the child's expressive characterization show his skill in combining portrait quality with genre sentiment.
