Study of sky and trees by John Constable

Study of sky and trees

John Constable·ca. 1821

Historical Context

Study of Sky and Trees, painted around 1821, belongs to the period of Constable’s most intensive naturalistic observation on Hampstead Heath. The combination of sky study with tree foliage demonstrates Constable’s interest in how atmospheric conditions interact with the landscape below. The flickering light through leaves, the contrast of dark foliage against bright sky, and the movement of clouds across wind-stirred branches are captured with remarkable freshness. These studies were working documents that informed Constable’s larger compositions, providing a vocabulary of natural effects that he could draw upon when composing exhibition paintings in his studio.

Technical Analysis

Painted directly from nature with rapid, confident brushwork on a small support. The interplay between sky and foliage is captured through contrasting techniques — fluid strokes for clouds and more textured, stippled touches for leaves.

Look Closer

  • ◆Trees and sky are observed from Hampstead Heath, the study focusing on the relationship between foliage silhouettes and cloud formations
  • ◆The rapid execution captures a specific atmospheric moment, with clouds and light changing as Constable painted
  • ◆The green of the trees is built up from multiple touches of varied hues, demonstrating Constable's broken-color technique
  • ◆This is one of dozens of Hampstead studies from 1821 when Constable was systematically recording sky and landscape effects

Condition & Conservation

Part of the V&A's collection, this Hampstead study from about 1821 is typical of the systematic observation Constable undertook during his Hampstead years. The small oil sketch has been stabilized. The fresh, spontaneous quality of the plein-air observation is well-preserved. The work's intimate scale has helped maintain its condition.
