The Virgin of Mercy of the Cadard Family
Pierre Villate·1452
Historical Context
Pierre Villate's Virgin of Mercy of the Cadard Family, painted in 1452 and now in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, depicts the protective Madonna sheltering the donor family beneath her mantle. This Virgin of Mercy (Mater Misericordiae) type was popular throughout Western Europe, showing Mary as a compassionate intercessor protecting the faithful. Villate was a painter active in southern France during the period when Provençal art reflected multiple influences from Flanders, Italy, and Spain.
Technical Analysis
Villate renders the Madonna of Mercy with the clear drawing and bright colors of the Provençal school, combining the traditional mantle composition with individualized donor portraits and careful attention to textile details.
