The Lamentation by Luis de Morales

The Lamentation

Luis de Morales·ca. 1560

Historical Context

Luis de Morales, called "El Divino" for his deeply spiritual religious paintings, was the leading painter in sixteenth-century Extremadura. This Lamentation on walnut wood exemplifies his distinctive style of intense devotional imagery characterized by elongated, ethereal figures and sfumato technique. Morales' art reflected the intense spirituality of Counter-Reformation Spain, and his workshop produced numerous versions of devotional subjects for churches and private collectors.

Technical Analysis

The oil on walnut demonstrates Morales' refined sfumato technique with delicate, almost translucent flesh tones and smooth, polished surfaces. The elongated proportions and intense expressions create an otherworldly spiritual quality distinctive to his oeuvre.
