The Judgement of Zaleucus
Otto van Veen·c. 1605
Historical Context
Otto van Veen (Vaenius) was a Flemish painter, humanist scholar, and the most important teacher of Peter Paul Rubens. This painting of the Judgment of Zaleucus depicts the legendary Greek lawgiver who sacrificed one of his own eyes to share his son's punishment for adultery, an exemplum of justice and paternal sacrifice. Van Veen frequently drew subjects from classical history and moral philosophy.
