The Annunciation by Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli

The Annunciation

Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli·1523

Historical Context

Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli was a painter active in Parma who married into Parmigianino's family and continued the elegant Mannerist style of that city's greatest painter. This 1523 Annunciation demonstrates the refined, decorative Mannerism that characterized Parmesan painting, with its elongated figures and rich, jewel-like coloring. Bedoli became the leading painter in Parma after Parmigianino's death.

Technical Analysis

The oil on wood displays the characteristic Parmesan Mannerist style with elegant, attenuated figures and rich, warm coloring. The complex spatial arrangement and refined drapery patterns reflect the influence of Correggio and Parmigianino.
