Saint John the Baptist in a Landscape

Giovanni Corenti·1480

Historical Context

Giovanni Corenti was a minor Venetian painter active in the late fifteenth century. This Saint John the Baptist in a Landscape from around 1480 places the ascetic saint within a naturalistic landscape setting, following the Venetian tradition of integrating figures with atmospheric landscape backgrounds. The Baptist's wilderness setting provided an opportunity for landscape painting within a devotional context.
