De Slag bij Bautersem, gedurende de Tiendaagse Veldtocht
Nicolaas Pieneman·1833
Historical Context
Nicolaas Pieneman's Battle of Bautersem during the Ten Days' Campaign, painted in 1833, commemorates a key engagement in Belgium's war of independence from the Netherlands in 1831. Pieneman was the leading Dutch military and history painter of the nineteenth century, who received official commissions to document the young kingdom's military actions. The painting reflects the Dutch perspective on the painful loss of Belgium, which had united with the Netherlands only in 1815.
Technical Analysis
The oil on canvas shows Pieneman's accomplished academic technique for large-scale military painting, with dynamic cavalry charges and detailed rendering of uniforms and equipment. The dramatic composition and theatrical lighting serve the patriotic narrative purpose of commemorating Dutch military valor.
