retable du Liget by Jean Poyer

retable du Liget

Jean Poyer·1485

Historical Context

Jean Poyer was a painter and manuscript illuminator active in Tours in the late fifteenth century, one of the most accomplished French artists of his generation. This retable from around 1485 reflects his dual mastery of panel painting and manuscript illumination. Poyer's work for churches in the Loire Valley combined the precision of miniature painting with the ambitions of large-scale altarpiece art.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with the meticulous precision that reflects Poyer's training as a manuscript illuminator. The retable shows jewel-like detail and refined technique characteristic of Tours painters.
