Resting Cows. Motif from Öland

Painted on panel in 1901, this work depicting resting cows on the island of Öland represents Kreuger's sustained engagement with animal subjects within landscape settings. Cows at rest in an open landscape were a subject with a long history in Dutch and Flemish pastoral painting, and Kreuger brought to the tradition his distinctive approach to the specific character of Swedish natural environments. Öland's alvar — the flat limestone heath — provided an unusual backdrop for such subjects: vast, open, and atmospherically charged in a way that gave even a quiet scene of resting animals an unusual spatial grandeur. Kreuger's use of panel rather than canvas for this work suggests an intention of tonal precision and smoothness of surface appropriate to a relatively small and intimate subject. The Nationalmuseum's collection of multiple Öland subjects by Kreuger reflects the island's importance to his mature landscape vocabulary.

Panel as a support allowed Kreuger tighter control over surface texture than canvas, enabling more precise tonal gradations in the sky and ground. The resting cows are integrated into the flat landscape rather than standing proud of it, their horizontal forms echoing the horizontality of the alvar itself. The palette is the characteristic Öland range of muted earth tones and grey-blue sky.
