Presentation in the Temple
Cornelis Buys·1480
Historical Context
Cornelis Buys, brother of the more famous Master of Alkmaar, was a painter active in the Northern Netherlands around 1480-1520. This Presentation in the Temple from around 1480 depicts the moment when the infant Christ was brought to the temple in Jerusalem. Buys worked in the North Netherlandish tradition characterized by emotional directness and somewhat less technical polish than his Bruges contemporaries.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the straightforward narrative approach characteristic of North Netherlandish painting. The temple setting and grouped figures are rendered with competent craftsmanship.
