Shepherd with His Flock
Jean-Victor Bertin·c. 1820
Historical Context
Bertin's Shepherd with His Flock, painted around 1820, exemplifies the classical pastoral landscape tradition that this French master helped perpetuate into the nineteenth century. As a teacher at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and mentor to Corot, Bertin transmitted the principles of ideal landscape composition from the Neoclassical era to the generation that would transform French landscape painting. His arcadian pastorals, with their carefully balanced compositions, represent the final flowering of the Poussinist landscape tradition.
Technical Analysis
Bertin's oil-on-canvas technique creates a measured, harmonious landscape with classical framing trees and a luminous distance. The palette is warm and carefully modulated, with the shepherd figure providing a focal point within the balanced compositional structure.
