Still Life with a Vase of Flowers, Melon, Peaches, and Grapes
Charlotte Eustache Sophie de Fuligny Damas, marquise de Grollier·1780
Historical Context
Charlotte de Fuligny-Damas, marquise de Grollier, was one of the most accomplished amateur still-life painters in late eighteenth-century France. A student of the Dutch-born flower painter Gérard van Spaendonck, she exhibited at the Paris Salon and was praised by contemporaries for rivaling professional painters. This 1780 still life with flowers, melon, peaches, and grapes showcases her mastery of the genre.
Technical Analysis
The oil on canvas demonstrates exceptional botanical accuracy and command of textures, from translucent grape skins to velvety peach flesh. The composition follows Dutch still-life conventions with carefully arranged elements against a dark ground.
