Pope Clement X (1590–1676)
Giovanni Battista Gaulli (Il Baciccio)·ca. 1670–71
Historical Context
Gaulli's portrait of Pope Clement X from around 1670-71 captures the aged pontiff who ruled the Catholic Church from 1670 to 1676. Gaulli, who was under the powerful patronage of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, received important papal commissions including the ceiling of the Gesù. Papal portraiture was a prestigious genre in Baroque Rome, continuing the tradition established by Raphael and Titian and carried forward by Velázquez.
Technical Analysis
Gaulli's oil-on-canvas technique renders the papal vestments with rich, fluid brushwork while capturing the aged pontiff's features with penetrating directness. The warm palette and atmospheric handling demonstrate the influence of Bernini's aesthetic on Gaulli's approach to portraiture.
