The Holy Family with Shepherds
Jacob Jordaens·1616
Historical Context
Jordaens's Holy Family with Shepherds, painted in 1616, is an early work from the period when the young artist was establishing himself in Antwerp alongside the already dominant Rubens. The Nativity scene, with shepherds adoring the Christ Child, shows Jordaens developing his characteristic approach: robust, full-bodied figures in crowded, energetic compositions lit by strong contrasts of light and shadow. The work was later transferred from wood to canvas for conservation.
Technical Analysis
The composition fills the picture plane with monumental figures pressed close to the viewer, creating an intimate, almost tactile presence. Jordaens's warm flesh tones and strong chiaroscuro show the influence of Caravaggio, filtered through the Flemish tradition of physical naturalism.
