Portrait of a Woman, Said to Be Lady Agnes Anne Wrothesley by Horace Hone

Portrait of a Woman, Said to Be Lady Agnes Anne Wrothesley

Horace Hone·1791

Historical Context

Horace Hone painted this miniature of a woman identified as Lady Agnes Anne Wrothesley on ivory in 1791. Hone was an Irish miniaturist, the son of the painter Nathaniel Hone the Elder, and brother of the landscape painter Camillus Hone. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and was known for his technically accomplished portrait miniatures of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy during the Georgian period.

Technical Analysis

The ivory miniature demonstrates Hone's clean, well-defined technique with precise rendering of the sitter's features and costume details. His careful attention to the elaborate hairstyle and dress reflects the fashionable appearance expected in aristocratic female miniature portraits of the 1790s.
