A Hare and Birds
Jan Fyt·1631
Historical Context
Jan Fyt's A Hare and Birds, dated 1631, is an early work by the young Antwerp master who would become one of the greatest animal painters of the Baroque period. At just nineteen years old, Fyt was already demonstrating the virtuoso technique that would define his career. The combination of a hare with dead birds was a standard hunting still-life format, but Fyt's precocious skill in rendering textures gave his early works a vitality that attracted immediate attention.
Technical Analysis
Fyt's early oil-on-canvas technique already shows remarkable skill in differentiating the textures of fur and feathers. The composition arranges the game against a dark background in the Flemish tradition, while the confident brushwork belies the artist's youth.
