The Meeting of Alexander the Great and Diogenes by Gaspar de Crayer

The Meeting of Alexander the Great and Diogenes

Gaspar de Crayer·1605

Historical Context

This early work by Gaspar de Crayer depicts the legendary encounter between Alexander the Great and the Cynic philosopher Diogenes, who famously asked the conqueror to step out of his sunlight. The subject was popular in Baroque painting as an exemplum of philosophical virtue triumphing over worldly power. De Crayer, working in Brussels and Ghent, was deeply influenced by Rubens in his treatment of such large-scale history paintings.

Technical Analysis

The composition balances the imposing figure of Alexander with the humble Diogenes, using dramatic contrasts of costume and gesture. De Crayer employs a warm Rubensian palette with fluid brushwork in the draperies and careful modeling of the figures.
