Martyre de sainte Catherine
Historical Context
The Master of the Turin Adoration's companion panel of the Martyrdom of Saint Catherine for the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg depicts the learned Alexandrian princess martyred on the breaking wheel. Catherine was venerated as patron of philosophers and scholars, making her particularly popular among the educated clergy who commissioned devotional paintings. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
The panel presents the dramatic wheel martyrdom with the detailed narrative approach characteristic of the artist, combining careful rendering of the torture apparatus with the saint's composed acceptance of her fate.
