Historical Context

This Tretyakov Gallery portrait of the twelve-year-old Elena Pavlovna from 1796 is one of the most tender works in Borovikovsky's imperial portrait series. Painted the year before her marriage to the Hereditary Prince of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, the portrait captures the princess at the edge of childhood, her youth and vulnerability apparent despite the formal portrait conventions. Borovikovsky's gentle handling of young female subjects — his ability to convey innocence without sentimentality — was one of the qualities most admired by his contemporaries. The Tretyakov version complements the Hermitage and Gatchina versions, collectively documenting the imperial court's systematic visual record-keeping of dynastic marriages.

Technical Analysis

Oil on canvas with exceptionally delicate modelling, the soft, smooth skin of a young girl rendered with the most careful gradations Borovikovsky's technique could produce. The warm, diffuse lighting avoids any harsh contrast that might age or harden the subject. The outdoor park setting is handled with airy, light brushwork appropriate to the pastoral Sentimentalist convention.
