Crucifixión by Juan de Borgoña

Crucifixión

Juan de Borgoña·1525

Historical Context

Juan de Borgoña, a painter of Burgundian origin who became one of the most important artists in Castile, painted this Crucifixion around 1525. Juan de Borgoña introduced Italian Renaissance forms to Toledo and central Spain. The painting is in the Girona Museum of Art. Tempera on panel required careful preparation and a disciplined technique of hatched brushwork to build form and color — a demanding medium that rewarded the methodical workshop training standard in Renaissance painting practice.

Technical Analysis

The Crucifixion scene reflects Juan de Borgoña's synthesis of Netherlandish technique with Italian Renaissance spatial composition. His role as a bridge between Northern and Southern artistic traditions is evident.
