Egyptian Family (Sketch for "The Battle of the Pyramids")
Antoine-Jean Gros·c. 1835
Historical Context
This preparatory sketch for The Battle of the Pyramids from around 1835 shows Gros still working on one of the most ambitious history painting commissions of his career, even as Romanticism had largely overtaken the neoclassical manner he had helped define. The Egyptian Family sketch records his search for the human dimension within the grand military narrative, balancing the heroic French soldiers with the civilian population caught in the battle's aftermath. Gros occupied a pivotal position between neoclassicism and Romanticism: his Napoleon on the Battlefield at Eylau had shown Géricault and Delacroix how emotional color and turbulent composition could serve historical painting. By the 1830s his younger rivals had moved beyond him, but his sketches retain the vitality that made his early battle paintings revolutionary.
Technical Analysis
Gros's sketch technique on linen is loose and energetic, laying in forms with rapid, confident brushstrokes. The warm earth tones and strong value contrasts establish the essential light and atmosphere of the Egyptian setting without finished detail.
