Franz Anton Maulbertsch was the greatest Austrian Baroque fresco painter of the eighteenth century, whose dynamic, colorful compositions decorated churches and palaces across Central Europe. This study for the Presentation of Christ in the Temple for Saint Ulrich in Vienna from around 1750 demonstrates the vivid oil sketches (bozzetti) that Maulbertsch created to plan his monumental ceiling paintings.
