breakfast still-life by Jean Etienne Liotard

breakfast still-life

Jean Etienne Liotard·1727

Historical Context

This early breakfast still life, painted on panel around 1727 and catalogued under the Führermuseum provenance—indicating its confiscation by Nazi authorities before or during the Second World War—belongs to Liotard's formative years, before his Constantinople journey and before the full development of his pastel technique. Panel as a support was more common in earlier European painting and was becoming increasingly rare by the eighteenth century, when canvas had become dominant for oil paintings. A breakfast still life from this period reflects the influence of Dutch seventeenth-century ontbijtje painting—a genre of intimate still lifes depicting the remains of a meal—and shows Liotard already engaged with the domestic subjects that would define his mature work. The Führermuseum provenance makes this work subject to restitution research.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel: the wood support's smooth, firm surface allows Liotard to build up glazes with great precision, anticipating the copper-grounded works of his maturity. The still-life arrangement requires differentiating multiple surface types with careful tonal observation.

Look Closer

  • ◆The panel support creates a smooth, non-textured ground visible in the fine-grained modelling of every object
  • ◆Early Liotard (1727) shows the Dutch still-life influence that would shape his domestic genre subjects throughout his career
  • ◆Bread, ceramics, and glass are each rendered with distinct light-catching behaviour appropriate to their material
  • ◆The Führermuseum provenance marks this work as part of the documented history of Nazi cultural plunder
