Landscape with Figures
Joos de Momper, II·c. 1610
Historical Context
Joos de Momper II produced this panoramic landscape with figures around 1610, during his most productive period in Antwerp. De Momper was among the most prolific landscape painters of the Flemish Baroque, producing hundreds of mountain scenes, forest views, and seasonal landscapes. The small staffage figures were typically added by specialist collaborators, often Jan Brueghel the Elder or his workshop.
Technical Analysis
De Momper's oil-on-panel technique features his characteristically broad, rapid brushwork that suggests rocky terrain and atmospheric effects with remarkable economy. The traditional color recession from warm browns through greens to cool blues creates spatial depth in the panoramic composition.
Provenance
German immigrant family, Chicago, by 1946 [according to memo of telephone conversation with Hope Abelson in curatorial file]; acquired from them by Mr. and Mrs. Lester S. Abelson, Chicago, 1946; given to the Art Institute, 1976.
