Battle Scene by Hippolyte Bellangé

Battle Scene

Hippolyte Bellangé·c. 1825

Historical Context

Hippolyte Bellangé was one of the most prolific French military painters of the Romantic era, specializing in Napoleonic battle scenes that fed the growing nostalgia for Imperial glory during the Restoration and July Monarchy. His battle paintings and lithographs brought scenes of military heroism to a wide audience and contributed to the Napoleonic legend that shaped nineteenth-century French politics.

Technical Analysis

The oil on canvas captures the chaos and smoke of battle with loose, energetic brushwork and a muted palette of earth tones punctuated by military colors. The dynamic composition conveys movement and confusion across the field.

Provenance

George F. Harding, Jr. (died 1939), Chicago; bequeathed to the George F. Harding Museum, Chicago; transferred to the Art Institute, 1984, accessioned 1990.
