Madonna and Child with Saints Elizabeth and John the Baptist
Jacopino del Conte·1535–40
Historical Context
Jacopino del Conte's Madonna and Child with Saints Elizabeth and John the Baptist exemplifies the Mannerist devotional painting produced in Rome during the 1530s. Jacopino was a Florentine painter who settled in Rome and absorbed the monumental figure style of Michelangelo, whom he knew personally. His religious works combine Michelangelesque grandeur with the refined grace that characterized Roman painting in the wake of Raphael's death.
Technical Analysis
The oil-on-panel painting demonstrates Jacopino's Mannerist figure style with elongated proportions and complex, twisting poses derived from Michelangelo. The rich coloring and smooth modeling show the influence of Sebastiano del Piombo, who similarly fused Florentine draftsmanship with Venetian color.
