Old Testament Figures in Paradise
Don Francisco Bayeu y Subías·1751–60
Historical Context
Francisco Bayeu y Subías was one of the leading Spanish painters of the late eighteenth century, serving as court painter to Charles III and directing fresco decorations for the royal palaces. He was also Goya's brother-in-law and early mentor. This early work depicting Old Testament figures in Paradise dates from his formative years, before his major commissions at the Basilica del Pilar in Zaragoza.
Technical Analysis
The oil on canvas reveals Bayeu's early Rococo-influenced style with luminous colors and graceful figural arrangement. The Italianate composition and soft modeling reflect the influence of Corrado Giaquinto, under whom Bayeu studied in Madrid.
Provenance
Probably Charles Boynton (died 1923), Highland Park, IL; probably his widow Anna Bell Boynton (died 1938); Elizabeth Boynton Millard and her sister, Edith Boynton Harmon, by 1941; given to the Art Institute, 1941.
