Amelia Opie by John Opie

Amelia Opie

John Opie·1798

Historical Context

John Opie painted his wife Amelia Opie in 1798, two years after their marriage. Amelia Alderson Opie was a novelist and poet associated with radical intellectual circles in Norwich and London, friend of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft. Her novel "Adeline Mowbray" (1804) would draw on Wollstonecraft's life. This portrait captures a woman of letters at the center of late-18th-century literary culture.

Technical Analysis

Opie paints his wife with intimate warmth, using a simple composition and natural palette that emphasize her intelligent expression. The handling is direct and unpretentious, reflecting Opie's Cornish naturalism rather than metropolitan sophistication.
