Altarpiece of the Saints John
Historical Context
The Master of Santa Coloma de Queralt, an anonymous Catalan painter named after this very work, created the Altarpiece of the Saints John around 1356 for a church in the town of Santa Coloma de Queralt in Tarragona province. The retable dedicates its narrative panels to the two Saint Johns — the Baptist and the Evangelist — whose paired veneration was common in medieval Catalonia. Now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, it is a significant example of mid-14th-century Catalan Gothic painting.
Technical Analysis
The altarpiece follows the multi-paneled Catalan retable format with a central image flanked by narrative scenes arranged in registers. The anonymous master's technique shows the influence of Italianate modeling introduced to Catalonia by the Bassa workshop, combined with the vivid storytelling and decorative gold grounds characteristic of the regional tradition.
