Pere Nicolau

Pere Nicolau (active c. 1390-1408) was one of the most important Valencian painters of the International Gothic period. He was the leading artist in Valencia during the early fifteenth century and played a crucial role in establishing the International Gothic style in the Kingdom of Valencia.

Nicolau's paintings are characterized by their elegant, flowing lines, rich gold backgrounds with elaborate tooled decoration, and graceful figure types that embody the courtly refinement of the International Gothic. He received major commissions for altarpieces from Valencia Cathedral and other important churches. His early death around 1408 cut short a career of exceptional promise.

Pere Nicolau was the master of Valencian painting at the moment of its most refined International Gothic achievement, creating altarpieces of exceptional elegance that combine Franco-Burgundian decorative refinement with the vigorous narrative tradition of Catalan painting and a local Valencian sensitivity to warm Mediterranean color. Pere Nicolau was the founding figure of the Valencia school of International Gothic painting, the painter who established the distinctive local variant of the style that would define Valencian painting in the early fifteenth century. His influence on his successor Gonçal Peris and the wider circle of Valencian painters was direct and formative, shaping the visual language of devotional painting in the Kingdom of Valencia for a generation.
