Biography
Gustaf Cederström (1845–1933) was a Swedish history painter whose large-scale canvases of national military and royal subjects became defining images of late-nineteenth-century Swedish patriotism. His best-known work, Bringing Home the Body of King Karl XII (1884), depicts the Swedish king's corpse being carried across snowy mountains after his death at Fredrikshald and is considered one of the iconic Swedish paintings of the period. Cederström trained in Düsseldorf and Paris and served as director of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.
Artistic Style
Cederström painted in a monumental Romantic-realist manner with sober palettes, firm academic drawing, and carefully researched historical costume. His compositions use processional or funerary structures to heighten emotion.
