Biography

Domenico Induno (1815–1878) was a leading Milanese genre and history painter of the Italian Risorgimento, celebrated for intimate scenes of bourgeois and peasant life and for canvases commemorating the Italian wars of independence. Trained at the Brera, Induno produced sentimentally observed family interiors, market scenes, and patriotic narratives that became enormously popular in mid-nineteenth-century Lombardy.

Artistic Style

Induno painted with meticulous detail, warm earth-tone palettes, and an emphasis on the emotional and social dimensions of everyday life. His handling is smooth and his observation of textile and interior accouterment precise.

Historical Significance

Induno produced some of the most widely reproduced images of Risorgimento Italy and helped establish the modern Italian genre tradition.
