Bonaventura Peeters the Elder

Bonaventura Peeters the Elder (1614–1652) was an Antwerp-based Flemish marine painter and one of the most accomplished seascape specialists in the Southern Netherlands. He produced stormy coastal scenes, calm harbor views, naval engagements, and Mediterranean port capriccios in a style that combined Flemish vigor with close observation of rigging and hull construction. Peeters also worked as a draftsman, etcher, and occasional religious painter. He headed a family workshop that included his brothers Gillis and Jan Peeters and his sister Catharina Peeters.

Peeters painted in a dramatic Flemish marine idiom with strong tonal contrast between roiling skies and illuminated sails. His compositions favor diagonal movement, and he rendered ship detail with technical precision.

Peeters established the Flemish marine painting tradition in Antwerp and shaped the next generation of Netherlandish seascape painters, bridging the Dutch and Flemish marine schools.
