His style is characterized by subtle, refined handling, with soft, luminous flesh tones and a gentle, flattering approach to female portraiture that was unmatched by any contemporary British painter.
Biography
Allan Ramsay was born in Edinburgh on 13 October 1713, the son of the poet Allan Ramsay. He studied in Edinburgh, London, and Rome, where he trained under Francesco Solimena and Francesco Imperiali. This Italian training gave Ramsay a sophistication and technical refinement that distinguished him from most British portraitists of his generation.
Returning to London in 1738, Ramsay quickly established himself as the leading portrait painter in Britain, a position he maintained until the rise of Joshua Reynolds in the 1750s. His portraits of women were particularly admired for their delicacy, sensitivity, and graceful handling of fabrics and complexion. He painted George III and Queen Charlotte shortly after the king's accession in 1760, and was appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to the King in 1767.
Ramsay was also a cultivated intellectual who wrote essays on art, politics, and classical literature. A serious injury to his painting arm in the 1770s forced him to rely increasingly on studio assistants for the many replica portraits demanded by his royal appointment. He spent his later years traveling in Italy and engaging in literary pursuits. He died in Dover on 10 August 1784 while returning from Italy.
Artistic Style
Ramsay painted portraits with an elegance and delicacy that reflected his French and Italian training. His style is characterized by subtle, refined handling, with soft, luminous flesh tones and a gentle, flattering approach to female portraiture that was unmatched by any contemporary British painter. His palette is typically cool and harmonious, with silvery tones and pastel accents.
His technique shows the influence of French Rococo portraiture in its delicacy and refinement, combined with the Italian training that gave his work a structural solidity beneath its graceful surface. Ramsay's portraits of women, in particular, achieve a tenderness and sensitivity that distinguish them from the more robust manner of his English contemporaries.
Historical Significance
Allan Ramsay was the most important British portrait painter before Reynolds, and his sophisticated, Continental-influenced style raised the standard of British portraiture in the mid-eighteenth century. His appointment as Principal Painter to the King recognized his preeminent position in British art.
His refinement and intellectual breadth helped establish the portrait painter as a figure of cultural importance rather than merely a skilled craftsman, paving the way for the elevated social status that Reynolds and other painters would achieve later in the century.
